A Butterfly is Born

See how the old, oak stump from the Welsh valleys was transformed into a wonderful butterfly. John and his trusty chainsaw create this marvelous sculpture portraying the life cycle of a caterpillar which will be enjoyed by all for many years to come.

The sculpture is currently taking centre stage as part of a space transformation project at Greenacres Primary School and is set within a woodland installation due to be complete by the end of May.

In the third week of working at Greenacres Primary School, the pupils created a fantastic story involving a hypnotic Dragon; a cycling Princess and a flying pig! All of which were made into wonderful willow sculptures for the school. The children’s story is currently going through the illustration process and will be published as a book for all to enjoy later on in the year.

See the responses of Year 3 pupils as they were given the opportunity to be involved in the designing process of a sculpture.

The resulting art installation will also be made by the pupils and placed in the school grounds for the whole school community to enjoy.

Moving the Stump

What better place to gain inspiration for a primary school woodland installation than the Welsh valleys. The centre piece of which will be a beautiful, authentic oak sculpture. But before any sculpting can be done, there’s the small matter of moving the 4 tonne oak tree stump, in monsoon conditions.

Right, so put your feet up, wait for the sun to come out and have a nice cup of tea? Not for the boys out in the sticks. They don’t hang around or do things by halves.

But how do you move an old tree stump to where you want it? It’s easy when you know how…

See how becoming art critics had an impact on the creative learning of year 3 children.

Year 3 learners are producing excellent outcomes in literacy and digital creativity as part of a project that involves them designing and making a sculpture for their school grounds.

The group looked at a piece of conceptual art and evaluated it as ‘art critics’ producing excellent documentation and poetry inspired by the piece.

A Community Garden

Working with primary & secondary students to create a community garden within school grounds

We recently completed a new community garden project working with primary and secondary students and the whole community through the local community safety partnership.

The project responded to local need and had many strands including urban renewal, community development and creative learning. Year 6 children worked with older student mentors and selected a ‘dead space’ in the secondary school grounds as a excellent site for transformation.

The local community and in particular older people wanted to create a community garden and through this link we were able to establish a steering group of keen gardening volunteers who will help ensure the projects sustainability and longevity.

The learning experience of all the young people was immensely valuable and as the year 6 pupils are moving to the secondary school, it has really helped them prepare for the next phase of their education.

The outdoor learning centre at Short Wood is nearly completed and our feet can barely contain themselves!

We have gone for a rustic hardwood floor over recycled glass insulation. The high insulation values helped achieve the triple A status for the building and the floor is good enough to lie down on!

KS2 learners have been producing fantastic stories using digital creativity.

One of the joys of working with children is their ability to consistently amaze. Given the opportunity their imagination knows no bounds and is a constant source of inspiration. Working on this recent project, children have been able to lead a creative process and produce stories using a mix of reading, writing, illustration and digital tools. This short film is just one example of the many outcomes from this creative experience.

The complete collection of stories have been showcased in sharing events today and the impact upon learning, skills and confidence has been fantastic. Later the children will be reflecting and disseminating and documenting their learning.
